Interfacing silicon nanowires with mammalian cells.
Nanotechnology has received increased attention in the biological research field. The important examples are (1) the usage of nanoparticles in optical and magnetic resonance imaging;1,2 (2) the demonstration of potential application of metal nanoshells and carbon nanotubes for the treatment of tumor and cancer cells;3,4 and (3) the application of nanowire-based transistors to electrically detec...
متن کاملElectronic interfacing with living cells.
The direct interfacing of living cells with inorganic electronic materials, components or systems has led to the development of two broad categories of devices that can (1) transduce biochemical signals generated by biological components into electrical signals and (2) transduce electronically generated signals into biochemical signals. The first category of devices permits the monitoring of li...
متن کاملInterfacing carbon nanotubes with living cells.
We developed a polymer coating for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that mimics the mucin glycoprotein coating of mammalian cells. CNTs coated with these mucin mimic polymers have two novel properties: they can bind to carbohydrate receptors, providing a means for biomimetic interactions with cell surfaces, and, importantly, they are rendered nontoxic to cells.
متن کاملOn the Interaction of Adherent Cells with Thermoresponsive Polymer Coatings
Thermoresponsive polymer coatings allow the control of adhesion of cells on synthetic substrates. In particular, decreasing the temperature below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the polymer triggers the non-invasive detachment of cells from their cultivation substrate. Widening the range of applications of these coatings in cellular biotechnology requires a better understandin...
متن کاملAminopeptidase activities on the surface of mammalian cells and their alterations associated with transformation.
Activities of various hydrolytic enzymes were determined in rat organ homogenates and on the surface of cells from various sources, i.e., tumor cell strains, primary cultured cells, normal cells, and their transformants. Alanine, leucine, methionine, phenylalanine, and glycyl-proline aminopeptidases and esterase showed relatively high activities in all these organs and cells. In the kidney homo...
